New and Old Traditions Bring People Together During the Holidays

Some holiday traditions have been around for generations while others only recently burst onto the consumer scene. (Elf on the Shelf, we’re talking about you). One thing’s for sure, every family has its twist on their festive rituals. Below are some fun ways to celebrate the holidays.

Give Back – There are so many causes to donate time and money to it’s hard to choose just one. So don’t. From disaster relief, environmental endeavors, or health issues, everyone has a personal connection to someone in need. Locally, families work with homeless shelters and convalescent homes while kids get in on the act by picking out items for Toys for Tots and helping deliver.

Gingerbread Houses – Ready-to-assemble kits are readily available at most stores. Extra creative (and brave) parents can start from semi-scratch, either baking the pieces or using graham crackers. Royal icing, an array of candy and a gaggle of kids make it an afternoon to remember.

Cutting Down the Tree – Even families with a tried and true artificial tree will take a year off and cut one down at a tree farm. In addition to a wide selection of trees, most also offer fresh wreaths, as well as hot chocolate and a fire pit.

Menorah: Commemorate the miracle that a one-day supply of oil lasted for eight days. Light the nine-branched menorah to represent the miracle and one of the many Hanukkah traditions and customs.

Holiday Lights – Piling into the car and touring the brightest neighborhoods with Christmas carols on the radio is something everyone enjoys. And don’t forget your local tree lighting.

Break Out the Ugly Sweater – Whether hosting a holiday open house or taking the annual photo, there’s a guilty pleasure in donning an ugly holiday sweater. Some go all out with matching footie pajamas.

Classic Movies – So many movies, so little time. Whether it’s black and white or full of colorful words, the options of holiday movies are endless. Favorites include It’s a Wonderful Life, White Christmas, Christmas Vacation, Miracle on 34th Street, Love Actually, Serendipity, Home Alone, Gremlins, Die Hard, and Elf. Don’t forget the classics from the ‘60s; Charlie Brown Christmas, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

Tanya is the best! She knows her stuff and will give you her honest opinion while listening to what you're looking for in a new home. Because of her friendly personality and knowledge of Sacramento, I felt comfortable with telling her exactly what I wanted and did not want in a home. She showed houses that fit the criteria I was looking for and didn't waste my time with houses that weren't my style. She's an intelligent, knowledgeable, and wonderful agent to work with. And because buying a home can be stressful for some, Tanya's great sense of humor will put you at ease with the process from start to finish. From the day I first met Tanya I knew she would be the perfect fit for me as an agent and as an added bonus now a good friend. I'm so happy with my home buying experience and would not hesitate recommending her to anyone.
