Quick Ways to Cut Energy Costs

With cooler temperatures coming, energy costs inevitably will go up. There’s no need to throw good money away, however, when even small changes can make a difference on those monthly bills. Many of us don’t take advantage of many simple avenues to save money, according to a new survey from Only 14 percent say they unplug their home printer when it isn't in use, and six in 10 consumers don't shut down their home computer when it isn't in use, both of which could result in hundreds in annual savings.

Small projects

  •   Sealing home air leaks is a project that can have a big payoff, cutting your home heating and cooling bill by up to 20 percent.
  •   Tune up the heating system. Neglecting your heater can cause inefficiency and costly (and inconvenient) failure. A thorough tune-up will include inspection of the gas valve, filter, belts, pumps, burners, thermostats, and safety controls as well as clean the blower, gauges and pilot light and any other minor adjustments.
  •   Consider switching to a natural-gas water heater (which uses less than half the energy of an electric one), and turn the setting down to 120 degrees.

Efficient Appliances

  •   Replace a top-loading washing machine with a front-loader, which generally uses 50 percent less energy and a third less water. Use delay-starts to run appliances during non-peak hours. Wash clothes on cold whenever possible.
  •   Downsize. Many of us hold on to older refrigerators or freezers for overflow items (usually in the garage or basement). These appliances are big energy consumers.

Taking Control of the Thermostat

  •   You can save up to 10% each year on heating and cooling bills by turning back the thermostat 7°-10°F for 8 hours a day.
  •   Homes are getting smarter and so are thermostats. Smart thermostats are wi-fi enabled and can adjust to lifestyle and daily schedules, provide track-able energy-use data, and allow you to control temps via smartphone. Nest, EcoBee, and Honeywell are among today’s top brands.

If you want to understand how to get the biggest bang for your buck, we recommend a professional home energy audit, which can help you pinpoint areas where your home is losing energy and which improvements will save you the most money.
